GOP Agenda for 2006
What are the great issues that will compel the attention of our legislative leaders for the remainder of this year? Will it be to craft a package of reforms to our health care system? To align our taxing regime with government expenses, so that our national debt can be controlled, perhaps even reduced? A renewed commitment to fulfilling their oversight responsibilities over the executive branch? A plan to insure that young people will be fully prepared to compete in the global marketplace that they will confront? In an AP article yesterday, we read of the plans that Congressional Republicans have laid out to build a stronger, more prosperous America. Anti-flag burning legislation. Anti-gay marriage constitutional amendment. Restrictions on abortion. There will be no excuse for the opposition party if they fail to offer a more compelling agenda than this. As you suggest, there are more important issues that affect huge numbers of us, republicans and democrats alike:
Health care reform to ensure that the millions of uninsured Americans can afford basic health care. Don't most folks think that basic health care should be part of our notion of minimum basic needs in this country? If not curbed, the skyrocketing costs of health care (and insurance) will broaden the pool of unisured people.
Fiscal responsibility to reduce the massive GOP-caused deficits. The tax cuts and subsequent escalating deficits were fiscally irresponsible and clearly spell significant tax increases for all of us in the future.
Oversight of the executive branch is needed to curb their penchant for excessive power grabs...such as warrantless wire-tapping, or lying to the electorate about the basis for WAR.
Will the electorate wake up for the 2006 and 2008 elections? Will the Dems provide a platform to address the substantive issues? I hope so.....
